College Football is dominated by transfer portal talk during the offseason and its two open windows. When the calender hits August, however, these players that dominate our transfer portal rankings on the defensive side of the ball are sure to dominate their own headlines as well.

2023 FCS Transfer Portal Rankings: Defense

Included in these rankings are the top FCS players as well as Division II, Division III, and Junior College athletes that have joined the transfer portal and either committed to a new university or are expected to play at an FBS institution in 2023.

1) Travis Hunter, CB/WR, Colorado
From: Jackson State

A dynamic athlete, Travis Hunter will likely play snaps on both sides of the ball for Colorado. If he focuses on one position, he could likely be among the best players in the Pac-12, maybe even the country for that given role.

Even if he does continue to split reps at the highest level, Hunter will still factor into the top positional rankings for either wide receiver or cornerback. Hunter possesses elite ball skills on offense and defense and has matching athleticism all over the field.

He’s already in the running for the top individual defensive awards and will likely find himself on the same preseason watch lists for the offensive awards as well.

2) Shamari Simmons, CB, Arizona State
From Austin Peay

A former All-State selection in the state of Alabama, Shamari Simmons knows a thing or two about dominating elite competition in front of him. Joining his fellow Austin Peay to Arizona State teammate, Demetries Ford, Simmons adds another piece to a revamped ASU secondary that should turn heads in 2023.

In two seasons with the Governors, Simmons recorded seven interceptions and another 21 pass breakups. He has a nose for the football and chips in with terrific run-defense skills. Simmons has prototypical size at 6’0″ and 180 pounds, with some room to gain muscle to his frame and maintain his speed and athleticism.

3) Alijah Huzzie, CB, North Carolina
From: East Tennessee State

There’s a reason the Tar Heels were prone to letting some of their defensive back talent leave via the portal, or vice versa. A reason why some of the talent left Chapel Hill. Newcomer Alijah Huzzie brings with him experience, ball skills, and an ascending profile to UNC this fall.

Huzzie recorded six interceptions in just 11 games for the Buccaneers last year, pulling off over a dozen pass breakups in the process as well. A sticky coverage cornerback, Huzzie was terrific in all facets for East Tennessee State since he took over starting duties in 2020.

4) Antonio Carter II, DB, Notre Dame
From: Rhode Island

One of the bigger gets from the spring transfer portal, the Fighting Irish secured their fortune on the back end with Antonio Carter II’s commitment. Carter is a big man at 6’1″, 200 pounds who moves like he’s a much smaller, speedy cornerback.

Carter has range and ball skills, as well as a feisty attitude against the run. It is no surprise that he was one of the most coveted prospects to hit the portal this spring, and Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman surely got a gem.

MORE: Antonio Carter II Commits to Notre Dame

5) Demetries Ford, CB, Arizona State
From: Austin Peay

One of the top defensive FCS to FBS prospects is undoubtedly Demetries Ford from Austin Peay to Arizona State. The former Youngstown State defensive back simply locked down during his two years at AP and recorded three interceptions and 23 pass breakups over the past two seasons for the Governors.

Ford, though a tad undersized, has more than enough speed and burst to the football, as well as slick hips and a high level of instincts to play elite coverage on the back end. He immediately made the Sun Devils defense a better unit.

6) Isaiah Hamilton, CB, Houston
From: Texas Southern

Isaiah Hamilton heads to Houston after dominating at Texas Southern the past two seasons. Hamilton, who checks in at 6’1″ and 170 pounds, has terrific length but matches that length with speed and fluidity in his game.

He can burst to the ball at the catch point, making highlight-reel pass breakups or simply pass off his defender and nab interceptions on passes not even in his coverage range. In total, Hamilton made eight interceptions over the past two seasons and has amazing range in his game.

7) Zy Alexander, CB, LSU
From: SE Louisiana

The big get from SE Louisiana, LSU locked up Zy Alexander in the portal as just that: a huge get for Brian Kelly and Co. Alexander, who tips the charts at 6’3″, 185 pounds, is an ascending cornerback with a near-elite skill set that should translate well to the FBS level.

Alexander has great length and superior size at the cornerback position, sacrificing nothing in the way of athleticism or agility. He’ll use his speed and flexibility, as well as fluidity in his game, to stick with receivers, and he’ll never be out of range because of his elite length.

8) Kamari Stephens, EDGE, TBD
From: Florida A&M

The transfer portal received a huge boost when Kamari Stephens entered during the spring window. Stephens is a versatile edge rusher who can also line up inside and create havoc.

Stephens had his choice of a bevy of schools after a 10-sack season in 2022 that saw him rip through for 12.5 total tackles for loss. He exploded onto the scene in 2022 and is ready to take his talents to the top tier of football.

9) Jack Henderson, DB, Minnesota
From: SE Louisiana

With an ability to play just about every defensive back position, Jack Henderson was a coup for the Golden Gophers to pull from SE Louisiana. Henderson, who logged two interceptions and a half-dozen forced incompletions last year, has terrific size and even better range.

At 6’3″ and 205 pounds, he can play box safety or float around like a true, feared free safety. He moves very well in the passing game and proved to be a force in the run game as he ran the alley like a linebacker at times.

Henderson is an immediate impact player for Minnesota.

10) Justin Jefferson, LB, Alabama
From: Pearl River CC

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that if Nick Saban offers a JUCO linebacker, odds are he’s pretty good. Justin Jefferson flashed all across the Pearl River tape from a season ago, finishing with 86 total tackles in 2022.

Jefferson has ideal size at 6’3″ and 215 pounds, presenting high upside with his athleticism and other intangibles. He factors heavily into a three-down role as early as Year 1 with the Crimson Tide.

11) Jake Heimlicher, EDGE, UCLA
From: Penn

After two seasons of dominant action for Penn, Jake Heimlicher entered the picture at UCLA to pair next to Laiatu Latu and form a terrific duo off the edge. Heimlicher, at 6’4″ and 240 pounds, provided some of the top highlight-reel plays in the Ivy League over the past two seasons.

He knows how to get after the passer, and most importantly, he knows how to finish. Finding a role for him won’t be hard, and neither will the quarterback, as he has a favorable situation with the Bruins, rushing next to Latu.

12) Triston Newson, LB, Missouri
From: NE Mississippi CC

It’s not hard to see why Missouri moved so quickly to secure Triston Newson in the portal last December. After breaking the 100-tackle barrier in 2022, Newson drew a ton of interest from just about every team.

Newson broke out with two sacks, nine total tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, three interceptions, and four more pass breakups. That’s the kind of production that leads to a highly-ranked JUCO transfer and one of the best players available in the portal when he entered.

13) Daron Allman, LB, UTSA
From: Angelo State

Daron Allman turned heads during each of his four seasons at Angelo State. Leaving the Rams with 20 career sacks and nearly 200 total tackles, Allman is one of the most experienced players to hit the portal this offseason.

14) Lardarius Webb Jr., DB, Oklahoma State
From: Jones College

Easily one of the top-ranked JUCO transfers, Lardarius Webb Jr. heads to Oklahoma State in a hybrid capacity. Webb can play a variety of roles for the Cowboys but is certainly at his best in coverage.

17) Kwame Sutton, DE, Ohio
From: Austin Peay

Though slightly undersized, Kwame Sutton can bend the edge like few others that have made the leap from FCS to FBS this offseason. Sutton is a ferocious rusher off the edge with a full set of pass-rush moves at his disposal.

He exploded onto the scene with 4.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss in 2022 and is a model student in the classroom. Though standing just 6’0″ and 233 pounds, Sutton has underrated strength and knows how to use his leverage against more sluggish tackles.

From: Jackson State

Once a Florida Gator, John Huggins has taken the long road back to FBS. Huggins spent a year at Robert Morris and two at Jackson State since leaving Florida in 2018. However, his best football may still be ahead of him as he’s continued to improve in each of the past two years.

From: Stephen F. Austin

A multi-year impact player for Stephen F. Austin, JaTerious Evans finally broke into the starting lineup in 2022 and had a breakout season. With two interceptions and a handful of pass breakups to his credit, it’s no wonder why UL-Monroe heavily pursued the 6’1″, 190-pound cornerback.

At 6’5″ and 235 pounds, Wallin has the size to defeat upright tackles but also showed some bend in his rushes to get by even the most balanced. If he adds strength to his rush as well as some muscle, Wallin could be a force on the edge for the Cornhuskers.

75) Kaleb Culp, DB, Texas State
From: Incarnate Word

One of the multiple Incarnate Word to Texas State transfers, Kaleb Culp factors as an immediate starter for the Bobcats in 2023. With a great burst to the football, Culp plays a physical brand of football on the outside.

He didn’t flash as much despite a heavy amount of snaps, but that’s not indicative of his talent as he was simply avoided in coverage at times during his time at Incarnate Word.

76) Eric Taylor, DL, Mississippi State
From: NW Mississippi CC

A former four-star recruit and Under Armour All-American, Eric Taylor had to put his FBS aspirations on hold until 2023. That was, of course, after recording eight tackles for loss and another three sacks with Northwest Mississippi last season.

At 6’4″ and 295 pounds, he likely factors into the inside for Mississippi State but proved he could rush off the edge given enough space a year ago.

77) Quientrail Jamison-Travis, DT, Auburn
From: Iowa Western

Standing at 6’5″, Quientrail Jamison-Travis moves incredibly well for a guy his size. He ripped through smaller offensive linemen to the tune of 8.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss a season ago as he was more than just a space-eater on the inside.

Auburn scooped Jamison-Travis’ services in the portal, as he’s a three-down threat at any level. He will factor heavily into the Tigers’ rotation in 2023 with his quick get-off, instincts, and general force on the inside.

From: Northwest Mississippi CC

Showing a keen knowledge of the game and a nose for the football, Sam Brumfield turned heads in the portal after his 115 total tackles in 2022. He also recorded 13 tackles for loss and brought down six sacks and five hurries.

He’s a potential three-down linebacker, albeit a bit undersized, but possesses a great understanding of the game from the middle of the field.

79) Lonnie Rice, LB, Syracuse
From: Lackawanna CC

Lonnie Rice had a great final season for Lackawanna, recording 39 total tackles. His impact was felt all over the field and in every facet as he made 12.5 tackles for loss, including 4.5 sacks.

80) Terry Kirksey Jr., LB, Kansas State
From: Hutchinson CC

83) Anterio Thompson, DL, Iowa
From: Iowa Western

Anterio Thompson can play a bevy of positions for Iowa this fall. Thompson recorded six sacks and 10 total tackles for loss a year ago for Iowa Western, proving to be too much for guards or tackles to contend with.

The Hawkeyes shored up their defensive front with Thompson’s commitment in the portal, and it will be interesting to watch how much immediate playtime he gets under Kirk Ferentz. One thing is for sure, however, and that’s the fact that he’s worth immediate snaps.

From: Lehigh

88) André Mack, DB, UL-Monroe
From: Jones College

A ball-hawking defensive back, André Mack heads to UL-Monroe as part of a pair of defensive backs ready to change the backend of the Warhawks’ secondary. Mack hauled in two career interceptions and was a presence around the line of scrimmage with eight tackles for loss.

He has special teams ability with his return skills as well.

92) Shawn Holton, S, Texas State
From: Incarnate Word

Yet another Cardinal from Incarnate Word following his head coach to Texas State, Shawn Holton heads north to San Marcos with G.J. Kinne. After four years at Incarnate Word, Holton had a bit of a breakout season in 2022, recording three interceptions.

93) Dupre Mendoza, DT, Fresno State
From: Mt. SAC

A massive man on the inside, Dupre Mendoza stands at 6’5″ and 300 pounds. He uses that frame incredibly well and always finds his way to the football. Mendoza was constantly busy and recorded 38 total tackles a season ago.

94) Brevin Randle, LB, Louisiana Tech
From: Stephen F. Austin

96) Rashad Onezime, CB, UL-Monroe
From: Trinity Valley CC

The Warhawks grabbed a top JUCO prospect when Rashad Onezime signed on with ULM. Onezime recorded multiple plays on the ball in coverage but was a major component of the Cardinals’ play at the line of scrimmage.

From: Navarro College

Disrupting offensive plans for the Miners this fall, Viontay Robinson put on a show at times for Navarro College in 2022. In total, he brought down 43 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss.

He’s a run stuffer with a bad attitude who seemed to be in the right place more often than not a year ago.

98) Torion White, CB, UConn
From: Southern Utah

As a part of the mass exodus from the secondary for Southern Utah, Torion White found his way to UConn where he factors immediately into the lineup. White has plenty of size and a frame that he can pack muscle onto as well.

99) Kadarion Johnson, DT, UTEP

From: American River College

Crashing in off the edge, Cian Slone wreaked havoc for American River a season ago. He recorded 12 sacks and totaled 22 tackles for loss in what amounted to an All-American season.

Slone has terrific size and strength, as well as balance through contact, and should be able to translate his skills directly over to the Mountain West.

102) Aljareek Malry, S, Ball State
From: VMI

A three-down safety with an ascending game, Aljareek Malry was a tackling machine during his time at VMI. He recorded two interceptions and double-digit pass breakups to boot as he rounded out his career, developing his game over the past two seasons.

Malry should immediately help Ball State’s secondary, as he can line up at either safety position.

103) Gavin Pringle, CB, Georgia State
From: Bucknell

105) Rex Van Wyhe, LB, Kansas State
From: Iowa Central CC

Rex Van Wyhe flew all over the field for Iowa Central CC in 2022. He recorded 79 total tackles and forced three fumbles. There is a lot to like about Van Wyhe’s game as a potential impact edge rusher with the versatility to potentially play in the middle of the Wildcats’ defense.

From: Mt. SAC

In between positions, Keanu Mailoto stands 6’3″ and 275 pounds. He does damage in the pass-rushing game, coming off the edge, but was also able to chip away with multiple tackles for loss in the run game as well.

107) Tyrik McDaniel, DB, Indiana
From: Independence CC

A sticky cover cornerback with great length, Tyrik McDaniel played well in his lone season at Independence. He heads to Indiana as part of a group hoping to rebound for the Hoosiers in coverage, on defense, and in general, Big Ten play.

108) Tyrell Grayson, S, Colorado State

112) Jayden Loving, DT, Western Kentucky
From: Bethune-Cookman

113) Terrente Hinton, DB, NC State

From: Idaho

A big get for UL-Monroe, Devante Keys has some serious potential. At 6’5″ and 265 pounds, Keys is seemingly in-between positions on the defensive line. Finding him his right home will do wonders for his game in Louisiana.

118) Zach Haynes, P, New Mexico State
From: SE Missouri State

It’s rare to find a specialist, let alone a punter, on rankings like this, but that is Zach Haynes. The big-legged punter averaged 36.1 net punt yards and booted 20 punts inside the opponent’s 20 a season ago. His 2021 season was even better when he averaged 38.8 net yards per kick and had 25 punts downed inside the 20.

From: Ventura College

They say you can’t coach size, and that’s what Kyle Stanback has in spades over everyone else here. At 6’8″ and 277 pounds, he’s a physically imposing threat on the defensive front for San Diego State.
