Madeline Hollander Bio | Wiki

Madeline Hollander is an American choreographer, artist, and dancer. She currently resides and also works in  Los Angeles as a freelance choreographer. Madeline’s work explores the evolution of human body movement as well as the intersection between choreography and visual art. As a native of Los Angeles, Madeline trained with Yvonne Mounsey and danced professionally with the Los Angeles Ballet as well as with Angel Corella’s Barcelona Ballet.

Madeline is an intense observer of everyday gestures. Her work investigates the body’s ability to communicate and also respond to the limits within everyday systems. Madeline has been adding to Gesture Archive since 2013. This is a long-term research project whose job is to survey expressive human movement in all its variety. Madeline uses both performance and dance to communicate. She explains how a space in contemporary art can be experienced rather than space being a reaction to the art object. Her dances and performances are unlike the ballets she danced while growing up.

Her movements reflect her observations of gestures and also emulate the everyday. According to Benjamin Millepied, the artistic director of L.A. Dance Project, also the former New York City Ballet principal, there is a clear understanding of classical craft in the architecture of Madeline’s dances. Her fascination with systems goes over and above repeating existing systems. Madeline constructs systems of her own. The system involves placing the body in conversation with different contexts including molecular and mechanical arrangements.
